Beautiful Fairview was dubbed "BOGUSTOWN" by workmen impatient for unpaid wages from a Victoria developer for street and wharf construction in the area he misleadingly called "Nelson City Addition" when he advertised lots for sale.
The unofficial name stuck even after major industry such as the C.P.R. Shipyard, lumber mills, orchards, a brick yard and a zinc smelter operated there. It persisted even when the Nelson Street Railway had its terminus at the infamous Grove Hotel and later at beautiful Lakeside Park.
Fairview joined Nelson in 1921. Its beautiful gardens, comfortable homes, excellent schools, churches and recreation facilities make it one of the city's best places to live. City expansion in 1961 brought in health and educational facilities to gradually replace heavy industry.
